Zumba at Ruttger’s!

This summer, Zumba classes are being offered at Ruttger’s as one of the weekly activities. Zumba, which is a fitness program, has become very popular recently. It is estimated that over 12 million people are taking weekly Zumba classes in 125 countries. With its growing popularity, it is the perfect addition to this summer’s activity schedule.

Despite its popularity, some people don’t exactly know what Zumba is. The simple definition of Zumba is that it is a dance fitness program, which was created in the 1990’s. The more complex definition is that Zumba is a choreographed fitness program that involves aerobic and dance elements. The dancing elements incorporate a variety of genres, including hip-hop, merengue, mambo, belly dancing moves, and more. While this may sound a little complicated, Zumba is considered easy-to-follow and most importantly, fun!

Zumba was created by Alberto “Beto” Perez in the mid-90’s in Colombia when he forgot his typical aerobic music and had to use his own tapes. Since then, the dance-fitness style was brought to Miami and spread throughout the United States and the world, including to Ruttger’s. Classes are typically an hour long. During this hour, you can expect to hear music with fast and slow rhythms to accommodate the different dancing styles. And since Zumba is considered a low-impact program, it is safe for all ages. It is estimated that a typical Zumba session burns between 500 and 1,000 calories and helps build strength and improve motion and posture.

“Guests of all shapes, sizes and ages thoroughly enjoy their Zumba experience with Amanda, the instructor.  Ruttger’s will offer Zumba class every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  It is truly an exhilarating and very fun time, don’t miss out!” said Krisann Gray, Activities Manager.

So if you are looking to try something new, we suggest you go to one of the Zumba classes at Ruttger’s, offered to guests and the public. Guests can sign up for Zumba in the Activities Office, located near the front desk, or by calling extension 2215. The public can also take Zumba (or yoga) for $10 per class, so long as the class isn’t full with guests. To check, call or stop by the activities office.
